Ask a stoneyard for travertine, and the first question is usually about the fill. Most clients want it smooth — the small holes packed with resin, sanded flush, polished until the stone reads as continuous. It's the industry default, and it's not hard to understand why. Filled travertine photographs cleaner. It's easier to standardize. Fewer questions from a client who expected marble and got something else.

We ask them not to fill ours.

The holes aren't a flaw waiting to be corrected. They're the record of how the stone actually formed — small air pockets left behind wherever gas or water passed through as the mineral settled, thousands of years compressed into a slab. Every hole is a specific, physical event, not a design choice imposed afterward. Filling it in doesn't just change how the stone looks. It erases the only evidence that it was ever anything other than a finished product.

It matters differently depending on where the stone ends up. On a wall or a fireplace surround, an open pore is purely visual — light catches it, shadow pools in it, nothing more is asked of it. On a floor or a counter, it's a different conversation: unfilled travertine needs sealing, and it will pick up more from daily use than a filled slab would — a wine stain sits differently in an open pore than on a smooth surface. We still leave it open there too, but the person choosing it should know that's the trade they're making, not discover it later.

There's a version of this argument that turns into a metaphor too quickly — stone as stand-in for people, imperfection as a life lesson. We're not that interested in that version. What interests us is more literal: a material allowed to show what happened to it behaves differently than one that isn't.

This is also, admittedly, more work. Unfilled stone has to be selected carefully — too many pores in the wrong place and a slab is unusable for a countertop, however beautiful it looks on a wall. It's slower to source, harder to standardize, and it will never look as uniform in a photograph as a filled slab does. None of that is a good enough reason to fill it in.

Rattan doesn't grow like most of the wood you know. It's a vine, not a tree — it climbs, sometimes for over a hundred meters, wrapped around whatever's nearby to reach the light. When it's harvested, someone still pulls it down by hand, strips the outer bark, and splits it into the thin, pliable strands that eventually get woven into a chair back or a lamp shade. There's no machine that does this well. It's one of the last common materials where the human hand is still faster and better than any alternative.

That's the part most people never think about when they sit in a rattan chair. They notice the give in the weave, the way it flexes slightly under weight instead of holding rigid like upholstered foam or a hard wood seat. What they're actually feeling is the plant's original structure — a vine built to bend without breaking, still doing exactly that, years after it stopped growing.

We use it for one reason: everything else in a LILTERIEUR room is deliberately firm. Travertine holds its shape. Oak holds its shape. Limestone doesn't move. A room built entirely from those materials, however honestly they're used, eventually asks for something that gives a little — not visually, but physically. Rattan is the one material in the house that responds to you. Lean into a rattan chair back and it flexes slightly toward you instead of pushing back. That's not a design choice made for how it photographs. It's a structural fact about the plant, still doing its job.

This is also why we don't treat it as an accent. An accent is something you notice once and then stop seeing. Rattan doesn't work that way — the weave catches light differently depending on where you're sitting, casts a soft, shifting shadow pattern nearby that changes through the day, and only gets better with handling, the way a leather bag or a wooden spoon does. It rewards actual use. A rattan piece that's never sat in stays stiff and a little lifeless. One that's used every day develops a slight, specific looseness that makes it feel more like it belongs to whoever sits in it most.

Most rooms that use rattan treat it as a mood — a signal that a space is relaxed, coastal, unfussy. We'd push back on that a little. It's not there to relax the room. It's there to be the one material that meets you halfway, in a house built mostly from things that hold perfectly still.

Order limestone for a feature wall, and most suppliers will ask if you want it calibrated — cut to a consistent height, sorted by tone, arranged so the coursing reads as deliberate from six feet away. It's a reasonable request. A calibrated wall installs faster, photographs more predictably, and rarely draws a complaint. It also isn't how the stone came out of the ground.

We ask for it uncalibrated. Every block keeps the height and color it arrived with — a darker vein next to a paler one, a thick course above a thin one, joints that widen and narrow because the stone underneath them does. Nothing is cut twice to make it agree with its neighbor.

This isn't a rustic instinct. A wall assembled this way still needs a mason who understands weight distribution, load-bearing sequence, and how an irregular block actually locks against the one beside it — the discipline is harder, not looser, than stacking uniform pieces. What changes is the outcome: a wall that reads as geological rather than manufactured, because it is. You're looking at the actual variation in a quarry, not a design department's approximation of one.

There's a specific moment this produces that a calibrated wall can't: standing close enough to see that no two stones share a shadow line. Light catches each block differently depending on how it broke, decades or centuries before it was ever a wall. A calibrated surface gives you that once, evenly, everywhere. An uncalibrated one gives it to you differently every time you look — closer to what stays interesting after the tenth look than to what only looks good once.

Somewhere in most renovation budgets, there's a line item for hiding the structure — a dropped ceiling to box in a beam, a false panel to run wiring behind, a plaster skin over whatever's actually holding the room up. It's rarely discussed as a choice. It's simply what happens to structure once a room is considered “finished.”

We leave the beam showing. Not sanded into a decorative approximation of itself, not stained to look older than it is — the actual timber that's actually carrying the load, visible exactly where it does its work, with the joinery legible if you look for it. If a beam is doing something real, the room should be allowed to say so.

This connects to something larger than one ceiling. A room reads in layers, bottom to top — the floor and furniture close to the body, the everyday objects at eye level, and the architecture above, the beams and portals that are almost never where anyone's attention actually rests. Hide the top layer, and a room loses a full third of what it has to say; the eye never travels there, because there's nothing honest left to find. A visible beam gives that upper register something worth reading — proof, at a glance, of how the room actually stands.

There's a craft argument too, and it's the more demanding one. A hidden beam can be crooked, patched, mismatched to whatever's nearby, because no one will ever see it. A visible one has nowhere to hide a bad joint. Every piece of structural timber left exposed has to actually be worth exposing — which means the carpentry has to be as considered as the furniture it sits above, not an afterthought behind drywall.
